State-based trip density maps

Where trips actually start. Device-level mobility data for 2024, aggregated to H3 resolution-8 hexagons — roughly 0.7 km² each — drawn in true position and coloured by trip-origin density over ABS 2021 Local Government Area boundaries.

This is the demand layer underneath the origin–destination work: before you can model a corridor, you need to know where the people are. Each state opens as its own full-screen map — drag to pan, scroll to zoom, hover any hex for its counts, and click through an LGA to see its internal structure.

How to read these

  • Two scales. Per-LGA normalises within each area, so structure stays visible in quiet regions as well as busy ones. Shared uses one scale across the state — that is the one to use when comparing LGAs against each other.
  • Density is logarithmic. Trip origins span several orders of magnitude between a CBD and the outback; a linear ramp would show one bright dot and nothing else.
  • Blank and dashed areas mean withheld, not zero. Only hexes with at least five contributing devices are drawn.
  • Victoria adds corridor flow arcs on top of the hexes, with its own label mode to show or hide them. It is also built on ABS ASGS 2023 boundaries; the other six use ABS 2021.
  • The ACT is not listed — it is a single Local Government Area, so a per-LGA density map of it has nothing to compare.
